Back to Basics: 3 Tips for Creating a Modern Capsule Wardrobe

2020 is all about finding and establishing a new normal. The world is shifting and so are we as individuals! When it comes to fashion, it would make sense that we may have to find a new normal here as well.

With eco-friendly fabrics, sustainability, comfort, affordability, and minimalism at the forefront, making the right fashion choices isn’t always easy, but is definitely something to make the most of moving forward. To help you accomplish this, it typically makes the most sense to start with the basics.

A capsule wardrobe is a smaller wardrobe (around 35-45 pieces in total) that includes versatile pieces you know you will wear and that you love to wear. Each season, it’s important to do a mini closet cleanse so that you maintain the size of your capsule wardrobe. Forming a smaller capsule wardrobe that is modern yet versatile, allows you much more flexibility and less stress than a wardrobe full of clothes you never wear! Then, you can always add in more trendy pieces each season as styles evolve and trends shift or fade.

This type of wardrobe represents more time, money, and energy for the things that really matter in your life like your family, friends, and career (i.e., not your clothes). Here are three tips for creating the modern capsule wardrobe of your dreams!

Dress For the Seasons

One of the key things to get right in a capsule wardrobe is making sure you get your seasonal gear sorted. If you have items that can transition you from day to night or from Fall to Winter and Spring to Summer, you’ll have a much easier time piecing together outfits that look good and make you feel good too. For example, I wrote an article about what you can wear on those unexpectedly chilly summer nights that outlines exactly the sort of important steps you should consider for your own capsule wardrobe.

It’s also very important to choose pieces that you can easily mix and match with each other. This way, you’ll have endless options for outfits but not endless amounts of clothes cluttering your closet.

Color Matters

Never underestimate the impact color can have on your wardrobe. Sometimes people get nervous to try colors that are too bright or too far out of their comfort zone, but often a pop of color or a monochrome outfit can take you from drab all the way to fab!

Clothes come in a huge array of diverse colors and blends, and combining these is one of the best ways to make you stand out and give you more confidence. With that being said, it’s important to include neutral tones as well as black and white in your wardrobe so that you always have options. Especially if you need to attend an event with a more strict dress code, you can never go wrong with a neutral color. The bottom line is, color matters and so do patterns! Having an array of color and pattern options gives your wardrobe a cool factor and lots of versatility.

If you’re worried about how to start incorporating color into your wardrobe, try starting with a colorful shoe, like these yellow sandals from Nordstrom! Even if the rest of your outfit is more neutral, that pop of color will instantly elevate your look.

Find Your Jewelry Favorites

Jewelry can often make or break an outfit. Without it, sometimes it feels like an outfit is missing something. With it, you can make an outfit stand out in ways it couldn’t have before. From earrings to necklaces and even your engagement/wedding ring, it makes a difference!

Also remember, less can often be more when it comes to your jewelry. Don’t always pile it on because that can take away from the overall impact of your outfit. Fashion plays a massive role in developing your personal style and the way you choose to express yourself. Having a modern capsule wardrobe can take your confidence and style to the next level. You’ll always look put together without having to put in a lot of effort or stressing out about what you’re going to wear the next day or to a special event. It’ll also save you a whole lot of money and space in your home!

I hope these tips helped you start your capsule wardrobe and take your closet to the next level!
