On an early morning during my trip to Cape Town, South Africa, we decided to visit the gorgeous Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Considered the most beautiful garden in Africa and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, it’s found on the stunning slopes of Table Mountain and is a part of the mountain’s national park.

According to the website, Lonely Planet, “about 9000 of Southern Africa’s 22,000 plant species are grown here. You’ll find a fragrance garden… a Braille trail… a sculpture garden and a section for useful plants, as well as a section of the wild almond hedge planted in 1660 by Jan van Riebeeck to form the boundary of the Dutch outpost.”

During the summer months they even host outdoor concerts in their amphitheater centered in the garden. If I lived in Cape Town this would be my staple spot to visit. This was an absolutely beautiful garden with more plants and flowers than I’ve ever encountered before. My favorite plant quickly became the Leucadendron argenteum, more commonly known as the silver tree because of its gorgeous shiny, metallic-looking leaves. They have ultra soft, wispy hairs covering the surface of their leaves which give them their shiny appearance. It is an endangered species and typically only grows in Cape Town on the slopes of Table Mountain.
