How to Ace the Athleisure Trend

Am I the only one that wants to wear my athletic clothes all day everyday? Who wouldn’t, they’re just so comfortable! They call this “athleisure” and it’s become a massive fashion trend. It has even started to appear on designer runways, including those famous couture sneakers from Chanel.

People of all ages are wearing their workout-wear all day now, whether it’s leggings with a longer coat and a scarf or a sports bra under a puffy jacket. People shop for their athletic-wear thinking, “How can I wear this from the gym to the street and still look chic?” (Aye that rhymed! Bars.)

What are the top style mistakes you can't stop making?

Don't have the answer? Well, I do! Stop struggling with your style and take your first step into becoming a fashion maven.

Fortunately the latest crop of activewear brands are working hard to blur the lines between the locker room and your everyday wardrobe. Here are some tips on how to keep up with the times!

Keep up with seasonal trends
Until about a year ago, fitness did not have trends. It used to be all black; now it’s seasonal. Mesh panels were big, but now not so much . . . now it’s bigger placement patterns and color-blocking.

Invest in pieces that mix function and fashion
You have to buy clothing made from performance fabrics so it’s not see-through when you bend forward, you can’t see any cellulite, and you won’t get a muffin top. It should also be moisture wicking and odor resistant so that if you actually did just come from the gym, no one else has to know!

Accessorize appropriately
A pair of mirrored sunglasses, a structured leather jacket, or a shirt tied around the waist can really take your outfit from gym to street. The key is that the piece has a sleek, sporty feel itself. Don’t add a vintage fringed jacket to your Lululemon leggings or cat-eye sunnies to your zip-up Nike jacket. NO.

Dress for the occasion
Don’t be inappropriate. PROTOCOL PEOPLE. You would never walk into the Beverly Hills Hotel with a sports bra and gym shorts (I HOPE!), so please consider the occasion before you get dressed.

When in doubt, stick to neutrals
If you’re in your 50s and 60s, it’s a bit of a risk to wear something very vibrant that makes a statement. Start with a geometric print or stick to black, white, and gray and then move into brighter colors as you get more comfortable with it.
